Algebra 1 and Algebra Workshop

Semester Two Course Information (Mrs. McComb's class)

Welcome back to Algebra 1.   It's a new semester and a "fresh start"...let's keep what worked from first semester, and work on what didn't.  The goal is still for everyone to learn a lot of algebra!

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

Math is about numbers and the patterns and relationships between numbers.  In second semester Algebra 1, we will continue to work on:

ü     Using tables, graphs, algebra symbols, and words to describe number patterns and relationships

ü     Solving problems using these "representations" of number relationships

In particular, we will take what you learned first semester to help you with:

ü     Understanding and applying linear relationships

ü     Understanding and applying quadratic relationships

ü     Applying the power of algebra to solve problems

HOW YOU WILL LEARN

At the beginning of the year, we talked about six important characteristics of a positive learning environment:

respect each other

think hard

open your mind

work together

enjoy math

never give up

How did we do with this first semester?  This semester, we will work on improving the learning environment in at least two ways.

MATERIALS YOU WILL NEED

1.       The text book: Algebra Connections (CPM, 2006).  A copy has been checked out to you to keep at home for homework.

2.       A constant supply of binder paper (regular or graph paper) and pencils.

3.       A notebook that you will use only for math class (or organize binder paper in a section of your binder).

ATTENDANCE

Regular attendance in class is very important.  If you have an excused absence, it is your responsibility to find out what you missed and what you need to make up.

GRADING

You will earn two grades in this course, one for Algebra 1  and one for Algebra Workshop.

How Your Grade Will Be Determined

Algebra 1 (math)

Algebra Workshop (elective)

* Flex grade = whichever is higher, the average for tests or the average for application problems, applied at the end of the semester.
