Coach Kerr passed away in June of 2013 at the age of 64. Kerr, a long time San Jose State and Cal State Bakersfield Wrestling Coach, coached many familiar names of Fremont Wrestling. Some of those wrestlers include Ed Baza, Bobby Soto, Vince Baza, Anthony Baza, Daniel Atondo, Ernesto Ancona, and Amantha Hordagoda. Fremont was coached by TJ Kerr trained wrestlers for nearly 30 years, so to say he has had an impact on our program is an understatement. His passing is a loss for Fremont and all of California Wrestling.
Kerr was also a tireless fighter for the sport of wrestling at CSUB, within the state of California, and across the nation. In fact, Kerr resigned following the 2010 season after the university decided to drop wrestling and three other sports unless those sports could raise the money to pay for their costs. To reduce the money needed to retain the wrestling program, Kerr announced his retirement, thereby allowing then-assistant coach Mike Mendoza to take the helm at a lower salary. The CSUB program has been self-sufficient since.
Kerr’s accomplishments as coach and champion for wrestling have earned him numerous honors. He was named Pac-10 Coach of the Year three times (1991, 1996, 1997), and named Amateur Wrestling News’ Man of the Year in 2007. He was welcomed into the California Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2005.
