Cross Country Athletes of the Month
Our September Athletes of the month from the FHS Cross Country Team are Brenda Blanco, Pranav Balgi and Dhruv Sabherwal.
A cross country team is 7-athletes, with the places of the top-5 making up the teams’ scoring total. The 2013 varsity girls team, which was ranked 6th in CCS Divivsion-1 and 16th over-all in CCS, graduated 3-seniors, leaving 4-strong runners to be the core of the 2014 team, but with no expectation of being able to fill spots 5-through-7 with strong, committed runners.
Then along came Brenda Blanco: the freshman from Magnolia Science Academy middle school stepped-in like a pro, scoring the 5th spot for the varsity girls in all of Fremont’s cross country meets this season. Brenda’s finishes have been strong enough to keep the Fremont VG team ranked in CCS: 5th or 6th in division-1 and 11th over-all. Brenda was pulled in by Summer Conditioning standout Nazmiye Ornelas, also a freshman from Magnolia Science Academy. The two freshman have been joined by cross country 1st-timers Aileen Cabasag (soph) and Regita Soetandar (Sr.) to give a balanced 5-through-8 punch to the core running powerhouse of JJ Escalera (Jr.), MacKenzie Cox (Jr.), Kate Everhardt (soph) and Lauren Meier (soph)
Pranav Balgi and Dhruv Sabherwal
The two sophomores have finished extremely close to one another in the last 4-cross country meets. While the two consistently bring home medals when running against other sophomores, the two are being chosen for their team training contributions and recent/pending varsity contributions. The two sophomores have joined seniors Luis Cordero and Alex Perez in a strong effort to return to a level of consistency and performance not seen since the 2005-through-2007 boys teams. Dhru has recently scored huge PR’s at Ram and Santa Clara Central Park. Pranav has moved into a strategic position as the metronome of the boys pack, providing a strong race pace for strongest runners of the boys team. Another sophomore varsity point scorer, Gavin Swanson, is joined by Nic Otala (soph), Sagiv Guelfand (soph), Tommie Gomez (Fr.) Ben Swanson (Fr) and Nic Huerchert (Fr) to form a very strong secondary pack, made up of sophomores and freshmen. In addition to Pranav and Dhru, the future looks bright for Fremont boys cross country.
Fremont High School is a proud member of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.
