Immigration Project
Throughout US history, migration and movement have been major influences on policy and society. Immigration has played a major role in relationships between various groups today. During this project, we will be researching different immigrant groups, how they came to the US, what they experienced upon arrival, and how their experiences shaped history and society in the US.
Directions:
1. You will be working in groups of three. Your groups will be selected according to immigrant groups for your research. If you do not see the immigrant group you would like to do on this list, see Ms. Nahum. Follow all directions!!!

2. You will use a KWL Chart to determine what you know about the topic, what questions you have, and what you have learned at the end of the project.
3. Your group will need to RESEARCH your immigration group. Your group will have access to the library and the computer lab through this week (December 5-12, 2006) to complete your research. Use your time wisely and keep each due date in mind. (See back page)
4. Your research will involve answering your focus questions. You will need to find 3 sources – one print source (book, encyclopedia) and two online sources (from the website provided). You will use your RESEARCH JOURNAL to keep track of your sources.
**NOTE: Any outside websites you would like to use for research need to be approved by Ms. Nahum or Ms. McLeod.
5. So Ms. Nahum, what exactly are we looking for? Our first step will be to look at the big question of this project and figure out how it applies to the immigrant group you have chosen.
BIG QUESTION:
How did our country change with the waves of immigrants moving to America? |
To answer the big question, you will need to research the answers to the supporting questions, personalizing the questions so they apply to your immigrant group.
- What were the “push” factors for your group’s emigration from their home country?
- Why were they “pulled” to the United States?
- When did the greatest number of them immigrate to the US? What were the settlement patterns of the group?
- What was their life like in America? (How were they treated? What did they accomplish?)
- How does the immigrant group contribute to American society today?
