High School Graduation Requirements
for Students Applying to
California State University

The twenty-three campuses of the California State Universities are located in Bakersfield, Channel Islands, Chico, Dominguez Hills, Fresno, Fullerton, Hayward, Humboldt, Long Beach, Los Angeles, Maritime Academy in Vallejo, Monterey Bay, Northridge, Pomona, Sacramento, San Bernardino, San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose, San Luis Obispo, San Marcos, Sonoma, and Stanislaus.

The California State University selects applicants from the top one-third of California's high school graduates. Admission is based initially on the student's grade point average and the score on the American College Test (A.C.T.) or Scholastic Assessment Test (S.A.T. I: Reasoning test). The Grade Point Average (G.P.A.) is based on work completed in college prep classes in the 10th, 11th and 12th grades.

To be eligible for admission to the system, but not necessarily to a specific school or program, students with a given grade point average must present a minimum corresponding A.C.T. composite or S.A.T. I total score (see chart below). The higher the G.P.A., the lower the test scores may be. Students with a 3.00 or higher G.P.A. are eligible with any score on the entrance examination. Reminder to Seniors: It is important to keep all of your classes and maintain the same GPA you had after you apply to colleges. Colleges will monitor your grades throughout the year even after acceptance. "D" grades are not accepted and could result in the colleges revoking your acceptance.

The eligibility requirements listed below are the MINIMUM required by the CSU system to be able to even apply to a CSU school. Meeting the requirements DOES NOT guarantee that a student will be admitted to a university in the CSU system. Certain campuses are more competitive, and thus, more selective.

For the more competitive CSU schools, students should take more than the required amount of courses, include several Honors and Advanced Placment (AP) courses, secure a higher GPA, and score higher on the ACT and SAT tests.
